Coral is formed from the remains of tiny marine animals and comes in two basic types, a bright creamy pink colour or a dark golden red colour. Supply was once plentiful but due to pollution, over harvesting and increased environment protection the supply of new material has drastically reduced in recent decades.
Early Romans credit coral with mystical powers that ward off evil and empowered wisdom on its wearers. Although this belief has since been disregarded it is still worn by many Italians as protection that will keep them from harm.
